Movement Is Gentrified and Gorgeous is a raw, immersive blend of reportage, memoir, and live illustration documenting one night inside Detroit’s techno underground during Movement weekend. Told through sharp, unfiltered prose and psychedelic sketches created in real time, this project explores Black alternative culture, gentrification, belonging, and joy—without romanticizing or sanitizing the experience.
Following a writer and an artist as they navigate packed dance floors, shifting crowds, and the tension between spectators and creators, this work becomes a time capsule of Detroit’s alt-Black scene in the mid-2020s. It’s loud, uncomfortable, funny, introspective, and deeply rooted in place.
This is not a guidebook or a nostalgia piece—it’s a lived document. A reminder that culture survives through participation, not permission.
